Product Information
Without question a definitive example of action role-playing gaming, Diablo III set a record for the fastest-selling PC game and was the best selling game in 2012, selling over 12 million copies between its release date in May and the end of the year. Developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment, a company also known for their Warcraft and StarCraft games, Diablo III is the third installment in the critically acclaimed Diablo video games franchise. The game is set 20 years after its predecessor Diablo II, includes key heroes and takes place in the same dark fantasy world of Sanctuary. Players choose from five unique character classes, the Witch Doctor, Barbarian, Wizard, and Monk. Opting for the Witch Doctor introduces players to a class based on the Necromancer of Diablo II but with more of a focus on shamanic and voodoo-inspired magic. As the Witch Doctor, players can use dark magic to battle their foes, summon creatures, cast curses, toss explosives, administer poisons, and harvest souls. The Barbarian class focuses on brute force in tackling opponents, relying on fury and physical prowess to progress through the game, while the Wizard class can teleport and shoot lightning, fire, and ice, much like the Sorcerer of Diablo II. The Monk, meanwhile, is proficient at melee martial arts, and the Demon Hunters depend on their discipline and hatred to hurl small bombs and wield their crossbows. Unlike in Diablo II, players may customize each class by choosing to play as either a male or female version. The Reaper of Souls expansion pack adds the Crusader to the mix, who deals damage with shield bashing rides around on a horse. With Diablo III, Blizzard brings back all the popular mechanics of Diablo II, including an intuitive interface and action-adventure game play, while throwing in plenty of all new content. Visually stunning, the game can also benefit from a sophisticated physics engine. Game play is uncut for a sense of continuous progression in real time and all environments are packed with challenging traps, obstacles, and destructible objects for a new level of interaction. Each of the game levels or worlds in Diablo III is randomly generated, lending great replay value to the game, throwing a vast array of enemies and attacks at the player. There are also four difficulty settings to find the right fit, ranging between Normal, Nightmare, Hell, and Inferno. Each difficulty setting carries its own rewards of armor, weapons, and runestones. For the player who likes a real challenge, meanwhile, there’s Hardcore mode, which carries the constant threat of permanent death for the player character as he battles his relentless enemies. Unlike other games in the series, Diablo III requires a constant internet connection to play, regardless of whether it is played in single player or multiplayer modes. This is to allow for updates in real time and PvP brawling against other player characters. An internet connection is also required for access to the auction house, which uses digital gold or real money, depending on the player’s location, and serves as a store where players can search through, buy, and sell a range of unique, powerful, and crafted items. As one of the most popular Mac or Windows PC games of all time, Diablo III is known for providing gamers with a vast and lovingly crafted world, endless game play, and plenty of scope for advancement. As testament to its general appeal and positive feedback rating, it was also released by Blizzard for console platforms as Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition for the PlayStation 4 (PS4), PlayStation 3 (PS3), Xbox One, and Xbox 360.
